About this Project
The goal of this project was to honor the home’s historic charm and character while thoughtfully upgrading key areas to enhance functionality and transform the primary bedroom and ensuite into a serene, soothing retreat for our clients.
The scope of the project encompassed renovating and furnishing the primary bedroom, closet, and ensuite, replacing all the flooring on the upper level, and revitalizing the dining area on the main floor. We also added a playful touch to the staircase risers, creating a fun yet subtle focal point when you enter the home.
Due to the primary bedroom’s unique layout, the closet was open to the rest of the space doubling as a walk-through passage to the ensuite. By incorporating a custom closet with a textured door style painted with Benjamin Moore’s “Baby Fawn” to add visual interest, we achieved a subtle yet intentional differentiation of space that leads to the ensuite. This paint colour adds a gentle contrast against the main paint colour “White Dove” for a subtle focal point.
When we started, the ensuite had a small shower with awkward wasted space in the corner of the room. To expand the shower, we had to move the door frame to the ensuite over to make room for the shower enclosure and keep it linear. If we didn’t do this there would have been awkward jogs making it difficult to add a bench in the shower and achieve a seamless look. For materials we kept a very soft and neutral analogous colour scheme and continued to use texture to create visual interest. We started by adding a herringbone brick tile on the floor, pebble tiles in the shower and added a floating vanity in a very light-stained oak for the warmth that natural wood brings. A floating vanity can enhance a smaller bathroom, making it feel more open. The wall tiles are all the same but to keep the space interesting we chose 2 different shapes of the same tile. Subway in the shower and square on the vanity wall. This achieves a sense of continuity but adds interest by the change in shape. Topped off with soft brass finishes and a hidden medicine cabinet behind the mirror for added storage.
On the main floor, we kept the existing old hardwood throughout but needed a way gently to transition the new hardwood on the stairs. (Here’s where we added that fun & subtle focal point!) We added a patterned beige tile to the risers to break up the difference between the existing hardwood and the new wood going up the stairs. This tile is also seen again in the laundry room.
In the dining room, we repeated the paint colour Benjamin Moore “baby fawn” on the existing wainscotting. We loved the character and charm that this space had and knew that it wouldn’t take much to enhance the space. Just by adding a new light fixture, wallpaper and painting the wainscotting we were able to achieve an updated & elevated version of the existing space. Topped off with some beautiful new furniture items like the large hutch with the arched detail to mimic the other arches through the home, soft rounded back chairs, and a new rug to anchor the space. This room came together so beautifully, with just a quick refresh.
This project blended historic charm with modern functionality, focusing on thoughtful updates to the primary bedroom, ensuite, and dining area. Through soft, neutral tones, natural textures and custom details, we crafted a home that feels both timeless and refreshed.
