Project: Walnut Grove
About this Project:
This renovation transformed a dated, compartmentalized townhouse into a warm, cohesive home designed for modern family living. The defining move was removing the wall that enclosed the kitchen, opening the main floor so that light, movement, and conversation could flow freely between the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
Builder-grade finishes were replaced throughout with materials that feel timeless and inviting. In the kitchen, grey vinyl flooring gave way to a warmer-toned option, while cabinetry untouched for over 30 years was replaced with a refined, functional layout. Bulky stainless appliances were swapped for fully integrated options that disappear into the millwork, and soapstone-inspired quartz replaced the original laminate countertops. A dedicated coffee bar, pantry, and broom cabinet were added to maximize everyday functionality without sacrificing aesthetics.
Where the dividing wall once stood, a new peninsula now anchors the space, offering counter seating that invites casual dining, easy conversation during meal prep, and a natural spot for little ones to take part in the cooking process.
Lighting was layered intentionally: recessed pot lights replaced dated track lighting for a cleaner ceiling plane, sculptural cylinder pendants define the kitchen zone, and wall sconces add a soft ambient glow that shifts the atmosphere effortlessly from day to night.
The renovation extended into the bathrooms, with equally thoughtful upgrades. The ensuite door was shifted allowing for a larger shower equipped with a rain head, hand shower and bench to create a more generous, spa-like experience, and a medicine cabinet was added for practical toiletry storage. Original vanity cabinets in both bathrooms were replaced with drawer configurations for more efficient storage topped with beautiful natural marble countertops. Both bathrooms received new tile flooring and micro cement wall treatments, a textural, contemporary finish that elevates the everyday.
The result is a home that feels cohesive, functional, and quietly elevated, designed around the rhythms of real family life.
