About this Project
Our Vancouver clients, Jamie and Mark, reached out to Designs by KS for help with the design of a few of their interior spaces. We began the design process with a walk-through of the home. This helped us understand how the clients use their space and the needs for the areas we were redesigning.
The main bathroom is used by the entire family several times a day. The existing space had a large drop-in soaker tub and a tiny shower. We reevaluated how the space could be utilized. By relocating the toilet to where the shower used to be, we made room for a vanity with double sinks and faucets. The drop-in tub didn’t meet the clients’ needs, so we repurposed that valuable space for a large walk-in shower. The shower was spacious enough to include ledges along both the long and short walls. Katerina prefers to work with a shower ledge, when space allows, rather than a niche.
The initial Material Pitch was a bit too bland for the clients. In the Material Pitch, we present images of previous projects to inspire the design direction. This part of the Interior Design Process helps us adjust the design before investing too many hours in something that might not work. Our second attempt was vibrant, featuring four different colors in the tile. The new bathroom is now more efficient and functional than ever, allowing multiple family members to use it simultaneously.
Before starting a design, part of the process is to evaluate a budget developed by either the contractor or our Design Team. I mention this because, as a team, we designed three spaces but only executed two of them after reviewing the budget and priorities.
This prompted us to develop the next crucial area of the renovation. We transformed the top floor stair landing into a home office. Previously bare, this space now features increased storage and a workspace for up to two people. Within the cabinetry..- A hub for storing and charging electronics while keeping them out of sight.
– A printer on a roll-out shelf utilizes an otherwise awkward spot—the corner under the desktop where the tall storage cabinets meet.
– Roll-out baskets in the bottom cabinets to make hard-to-reach places more accessible.
– Labeled storage baskets were used above eye level to organize items. This setup allows you to identify what you need, grab the basket, place it on the desktop, retrieve the item, and return the basket.
I hope you’ve gained some insight into our design process while viewing this colorful project. We believe that storage is a key element in creating a calming living space.
